Letters and Their Sounds

Research indicates that the fastest method for children to learn new information is through skill drill (flashcards.)  Children should be able to quickly tell you letter names or letter sounds; about as fast as you can move the cards.  Letters and sounds are the basics of phonics, having a firm grasp on this will allow them to unlock unfamiliar words.

  • Drill letters and sounds with flashcards.
  • Play "I Spy". "I spy something that starts with the letter B."
  • Sort pictures to their matching letter.
  • Help your child sort then read words with similar features ("magic e", "oi", "ar")
  • Help your child attach letters to each sound heard within a word.
